Arts & Crafts Rugs ON SALE!

"Arts & Crafts" is a relatively new, but by now well established rug category. In the past ten years we've seen burgeoning interest in designs resembling the carpets, fabrics, and wallpapers created by William Morris, C.F.A. Voysey, Owen Jones, Christopher Dresser and others in 19th Century England.
Morris and Voysey produced designs for both machine-made and handmade carpets, and in fact rugs were handwoven in the 1880's by Morris & Co. at Hammersmith (on the Thames near London) and Merton Abbey (in Surrey), and by Morton & Co. in County Donegal, Ireland. These handmade rugs were relatively coarse in weave (most had 30-40 knots per sq. in.), and were very expensive. As long ago as the late 19th Century labor in industrializing England was too costly to make hand weaving profitable.
The pieces in "Arts & Crafts" style we like best are the large-scale trellised florals with smokey, "flooded" colors. Most of these rugs come from India (sometimes from Pakistan as well); qualities range from 70-80 knots (the most common quality) to more than 250 knots per sq. in.
